Finally got a chance to come back here and finish redlining all trails. My goals were 1) find the famous Black Gum Trees, 2) Find Lost Lake, and 3) explore the mill (sawmill and shingle mill) sites. Took about 7 miles. Minimum mileage to visit Gum Trees is 5.5mi because you cannot bushwhack across the swamp between the Gum Tree area and the parking lot (map is very clear about this). Gorgeous woods, stone walls, and historic features. Saw almost nobody, which is what I would expect for a weekday. Lots of nice trails for running. The online trail map is excellent and trails are VERY well-marked which is good because there doesn't appear to be a whole lotta foot traffic southwest of Lost Lake. I will say, though, that the overlooks identified on the map were not super-obvious.. maybe better once leaves are gone. |
