With a fabulous weather forecast, our group of 3 did a 2 night backpack into the Wild River Wilderness area. After spotting a car at the Stony Brook trailhead we started our hike at the 19 mile Brook TH at 8:15 AM. Had lunch on the porch of one of the bunk houses at Carter Notch Hut. We bypassed the hut since the caretakers were doing a deep clean to the hut. After lunch we hiked our way down the trails eventually arriving at No Ketchum Pond campsite. When we arrived there was a one person tent site already set up. We did not see that hiker till just after sunset when he arrived back after doing a day hike in the area. Water at the camp can be obtained at the very small stream at the entrance to the campsite or more advisable to grab it at the stream where trail crosses it about 150 yards east of the campsite. It is very boggy to attempt to get it from the pond directly. Lot of evidence of moose in the area. We all had a good hot meal for dinner followed by a nice campfire. That night heard a moose grunting(sounding off) in close proximity to the campsite. On Day 2 we packed up and were on trail by 7:15 AM. Eventually arrived at the junction of the Wild River and Moriah Brook. Had a nice relaxing lunch on the rocky landscape soaking in the sun and enjoying the quiet. We spotted a sun bleached femur leg bone in the area. The boned measured 16-18" long and was very robust. We figured it was from an adult bear. After lunch we hiked up Moriah Brook trail eventually finding a campsite near Moriah Brook with beautiful swimming holes. After dinner and a small campfire, we turned in for the night. Had clear skies with a nice bright moon. In the morning we packed up and were on the trail by 5:15AM. We finally got to the Stony Brook TH just after 9 AM. After changing up we drove to Gorham and found a nice breakfast spot for a hearty meal. |
