Water crossings are running a touch high with spring melt, but nothing terrible. That may change with the 3/4" of rain on Sunday and a sharp warmup into the 70s monday and tuesday. Nothing that would turn you back, but likely just wet feet. |

A FINE day looking into Henry's Woods with Andrea. We both needed a checkmark for May 4th for 366. We bare booted until approximately 1/4 mile of the Shining Rock junction, then it was deemed more efficient for spikes. Rock solid rail early in the morning - varying in depth to about 3 feet - but only 6" at best in width. Spikes stayed on until treeline, then removed. We opted for a minor bushwhack down low and ended up finding an abandoned section of FWT, which was quite a treat seeing between the two of us, we have about 50 completions of this circuit. As mentioned, water is a little high but nothing bad. I was channeling my inner princess feet and being a wimp. I was able to stay dry. Ridge is largely devoid of snow except the few normal spots hidden in the krumoltz. Able to bare boot our way out, though spikes likely would have been faster - and far safer, but we love cheap thrills. Took abandoned section out. Noted over twenty people without a pack on their back - unbelievable. Also noted six trail runners with ~6L packs that where completely empty attempting a Pemi loop. There are still large sections of deep snow along the route, you'd definitely want some gear, snowshoes, and perhaps shorts that had more than a 2" inseam for that at present... |
