Comments
Comments: Route: out and back on Gorge Brook Trail.

This trail is well blazed in blue for all season travel.

Today the trail was snow free until about 2700 feet when ice and monorail emerged. Bare boots were fine until this point. When the monorail emerged, we donned spikes to stay atop the monorail. The monorail, for the most part, is consistient and stable. There are small sections that are snow free, but do not warrant removal of spikes as the ice and compacted snow soon return. Some portions of the monorail around 2800-3100 feet are being undermined by snow melt runoff and are unstable. From 3100 feet to treeline is a consistent, packed monorail. At treeline the snow vanishes, but soon returns in the scrub. After the scrub, the path is wet with wet rocks, some standing water on trail, and 95% snow free. We elected to remove spikes at the first treeline break and bare boot to the summit. In the reverse direction, we barebooted to treeline then donned spikes back to 2700 feet.

For this trail, I would leave snowshoes at home.

Lovely day, sans views, with the lovely Chantal and Kristen! Thanks so much for heading out on this rainy day!
