A FINE day was had straddling the border. This was my preantepenultimate peak on the NH100 list. We found great footing and trail conditions to the shelter. The ledges are weeping water but largely snow free. With this weeks coming weather, this shall change. Overall the snowpack is pretty much gone. We bare booted to the summit of South Baldface. From here, we took a bearing utilizing the awesome ledges north west of the summit. We found a recognized mining site, with a sign, register and tools. The register was removed due to it being very wet. It will be dried and returned in a few weeks, with dates going back over a dozen years. We then found exceptional woods to the summit of Sable, utilizing our snowshoes for delightful float, noting a few old cairns along the way. Hard to imagine a pile of 6-10 rocks is an accident. Actually ran into Ben, Just Ben, like Prince, on the summit of Sable. It gave us quite a fright. We did find old corridors that the moose have kept maintained of the old Sable Mountain Trail. We retraced out steps, and basically went due east following the ~2600 corridor to the Eastman Col, of which the woods where even more exceptional than those left upon the ridge line. In hindsight, the approach to the Eastman col could have been more efficient with snowshoes. Slippery Brook has an intermittent snowpack depending on canopy and trails direction, spikes would be sufficient here. Largely a chopped up monorail. Hit the Emerald Pool on the way out, of which Zachary decided he wanted to grid swimming the Emerald Pool as well, and dove in. |
