Comments
Comments: Great trail for a windy day; it's largely protected from the northwest wind. Great views, particularly the herd path a short distance below the summit off the climber's right branch of the upper loop (view of the Lake and Moosilauke). I came down the snowmobile trail; there is a nice view of the Franconia Ridge a tenth or two below the summit. Instead of turning onto the trail down at 0.9 miles from the parking lot, I continued straight on the snowmobile trail. This continued down to a gate at the end of Doetown Road about 100 yards from the parking lot. This made for an interesting "figure 8" hike instead of an out and back. About 2 -3 inches of granular snow was on the trails; it did not require traction. The snowmobile trail is much smoother than the hiking trail and will be amenable to snowshoeing well before the trail, which is still quite rocky. The gate on the snowmobile trail is closed, so I don't know when it might start being used by snowmobiles. I did not encounter any water crossing problems on the snowmobile trail, which has 5 - 10 bridges now.
