The road on the north slope is a little steep and loose, but with 4wd and mid clearance you can easily drive up to the end of the road, at almost 2600'. There is an antennae at the end and a great view from the road. |

From my parking spot at the end of the road I could see the young maples were thick along the road, so I walked past the antennae on a slash-covered skid path, curving around the mountain until I could see better old woods above the new clearcut. I quickly got up to the first bump, not the summit I wanted so I wove my way down and over to the correct summit of Layton. The woods were easy to move through, plenty open and no undergrowth. No complaints. I found the jar on the ground and rehung it, it was surprisingly still dry. I then made my way contouring over and then up to Smart on the long gentle ridge, on a regular moose highway. I got to follow a bull on the way to the summit, and I ran into a cow on the way down, and collected some old bones. The triangle loop was 3 miles and took me almost 3 hours somehow, but I was not in a hurry. There are views to be found from the summits if you poke around. |
