Today I decided to check out the trails in Peaks-Kenny State Park in Dover-Foxcroft and Bowerbank. The park road is closed for the season, so I had to park about a mile away from the ranger station.
After a quick road walk, I started by hiking Brown's Point Trail. This trail leads through a variety of interesting forests before reaching a rock on the shore, which would likely be a great spot to swim in the summer. After doubling back a ways, I took an unofficial-looking trail, marked with flagging tape, which connected to the Cove Trail. The Cove Trail followed the shore for a short bit before reaching the beach area.
I then hiked the Loop and Birch Mountain Ledge Trail, which was my favorite trail in the park. This trail passed through some beautiful and interesting forests on the lower slopes of Birch Mountain with lots of moss and huge trees. At the end of the loop, I followed the park road back to my car.
It was a cold and blustery day, but it was perfect for a low elevation hike. The trails at Peaks-Kenny are very nice, and the picnic table sculptures are a great touch! |
