Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Only small brooks on this trail. Easy to cross.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail in good condition. One small (2-3" dia) evergreen about 2 feet above surface that is easy to straddle over. The MATC registration box is full and it appeared that all the cards have been used. A few bog bridges were damaged although it presented no problems. Most bog bridges are in good condition. There are a couple of mud spots that could use a bog bridge or stepping stones.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Two dogs made it to East Baldpate. Be aware there is one ladder between the two peaks.
Bugs
Bugs: None
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found sunglasses on the trail below the lean-to spur. It may have been the Gray ME hiker.

Comments
Comments: There are lots of rock steps especially on the steep grade between the Baldpate Lean-to spur and West Peak. The ledges on East Peak would be potentially dangerous when icy. Today, these exposed ledges on East Peak were mostly dry with only some wet spots that weren't slippery. The ledges in the forested areas were mostly wet with some running water that weren't slippery today. There are MATC signs marking each of the two summits. The East Peak is an alpine area with extensive views in all directions. Mt Washington can be seen to the south and Abraham, Spaulding, and Sugarloaf were visible in the distance to the north. Elephant, Old Blue, Tumbledown, and Blue are in the nearer peaks to the north. Umbagog Lake is to the west.
Met a man from Gray ME who overnighted at the Baldpate Lean-to. A couple from Cape Cod hiked to West Peak. Three hikers and two dogs made it to East Peak. Otherwise, I saw no other hikers in the Baldpates.
