There is snow across the water crossings on Carter Dome Trail but it’s not a snow bridge. It’s just the snow that fell on Saturday. Watch where you step (ask me how I know!). Water levels are (thankfully) low. |

Holy trail breaking, Batman.
I hiked with my friends the Wandering Soules; they needed South as well as Middle, and I was toasted when we got to South (and didn’t need Middle), so they continued on and I headed down. They will post details later!!
19MB Trail was broken out on Sunday (THANK YOU!!) and had a good trough this morning but it was soft.
We had a little party when we got to the CD junction as CD appeared to be broken out … our party ended 0.12 miles later. Whoever looked at CD on Sunday thought better of it really quickly and turned back.
Between that point and the water crossings it was 6-12” of mushy snow with intermittent drifts. The water crossings were tedious and hard to rock hop.
After that (of course) the snow got deeper. We found ourselves slipping backward on the steep bits. It was very time consuming and super exhausting. There were some spots with nearly waist deep drifts but honestly it was mostly just (just?!) knee deep powder. If I hadn’t been with these two powerhouse hikers I wouldn’t have had the courage and motivation to slog through this, and wouldn’t have seen the South summit today!
When I headed down I thought that it would be smooth sailing but it was more tedious than expected because the sun had warmed the snow and the air temperature was warm, so I was sliding around quite a lot on the descent.
I’m not done with March (42/48) but I am done with March 2024. These trail conditions are grueling and I am exhausted - see you In April!! |
