Date of Hike: Sunday, March 24, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: At 10am the Baldface Circle Trailhead parking lot had not yet been plowed, so we shoveled out a space for our car on the side of Rt. 113. By 6pm it was plowed.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Skis
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Each had a snowbridge or could be jumped over in one hop.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Blazes up to the first 1/2 mile on Slippery Brook Trail were frequent, but after that they were too sparse to keep hikers on the trail - minor variations of the route were forming. Eastman Mtn. Trail likewise had too few blazes. Using GPS we were able to stay close to the official trail, but sometimes not quite on it. No problematic blowdowns.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Seems fine. In fact, we saw some dogs running with skiers on Slippery Brook Trail.

Comments
Comments: Snowshoes or skis are the only options right now - only a fool would attempt it in microspikes or bare boots!

We had a group of 4 snowshoers doing an out-and-back to Eastman Mtn, and we saw no other people on the trail except for 5 skiers. Two of the skiers were ahead of us; they had gone up the beginning of Baldface Circle Trail, continued on Slippery Brook Trail, and then turned right to go up Baldface Knob Trail. So those trails were partially broken out by the time we were on them. Eastman Mtn. Trail, however, was completely untouched, so we were breaking trail there, which was slow-going since the snow up there was about 3 feet deep, unpacked powder. It seems that we were the only ones to go to Eastman Mtn. today.

Now that the entire route up to Eastman Mtn. has a snowshoe track, it should be fast for anyone in snowshoes or skis! The powdery snow is still loose.

No one today went on the north branch of Baldface Circle Trail on the south branch of Baldface Circle Trail beyond the junction with Slippery Brook Trail. Sometime between 10am and 6pm, someone broke out the short side trail to Emerald Pool.
